Can you explain why Rachael Flatt was not awarded points for her final spiral sequence. I’m only a layperson when it comes to understanding this scoring system but I don’t understand the error AT ALL. Thanks for you help.

From my understanding, Rachael’s final change of direction combination spin was recorded as two separate spins because she recentered the change of direction too far from the initial spin. But, she had already completed the allowable number and types of non-combination spins earlier in her program, and thus she did not receive credit for the final spin(s).

BTW – in your comment you said “final spiral sequence” but Flatt did receive credit for the spiral sequence, so I assumed you meant the spin that she did not receive credit for. Please let me know if that’s wrong!

PS – here is the judging guideline. The section under free skate spins explains it all.
