Well, the ladies have skated their shorts and here are some thoughts on the top girls. Full results are below.
Alissa Czisny (!) gets an exclamation mark because I love to watch her skate and am so happy she did so well (personal best, woot!). It was a great performance. I would love to see that opening combo be a triple/triple, but for this championship the triple/double was obviously fine and she was amazing! First standing ovation of the competition, according to the announcers (does anyone know if this is true?).
Rachael Flatt was strong and clean, but didn't have enough to beat Czisny tonight. She is looking good though. The commentators thought she was skating conservatively, which I didn't notice as much, although I did agree with them that I would have liked to have seen the old triple/triple combination. I like the program, wish her line were better, but she definitely impressed tonight.
Caroline Zhang came out with a nice smile and what seemed to be a lot of confidence. She hit her first couple of jumping passes (although it appears she cheated one of her combination jumps) but then sort of lost focus on the landing of her double axel. All of a sudden, the program deflated for me; her footwork was sluggish and slow. Thankfully, when Zhang does her spirals, I forget about everything else and she wins me back. I wish she could have finished the program as well as she (seemed to) start it though. The commentators were saying she didn't have enough revolutions in her spin either. That seems like another moment of lost focus to me. A bit of a disappointment, but not a bad performance.
Brittney Rizo's performance was lovely as well (hooray for the triple/triple!) - but she screwed up her double axel too. Why is everyone doing that? I saw her in the Eastern sectionals recently and was quite impressed. I think she was even better today.
Katrina Hacker is just a little ice princess. Loved her skate; if she's clean in the free skate perhaps she can challenge for a podium spot.
My computer blacked out for reigning champion Mirai Nagasu, who tied Katrina Hacker's score. No deductions, though, so I'm guessing she did ok! um, she crashed into the wall!?? AUGH, poor girl.
And a final lament for Ashley Wagner's disastrous program, which left her in 12th place. She's been one of my faves this season and I'm sad to see her do so poorly. Let's see how she regroups.
