German Pair Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy have topped off their season with a repeat victory at the World Figure Skating Championships. They were followed by China's Zhang and Zhang and Russia's Kavaguti (holy new name batman!) and Smirnov.
Some thoughts:
-Savchenko and Szolkowy really won this event. They were amazing from start of the short program to finish of the free skate (with the exception of Szolkowy's random footwork fall). I would have given my fuschia hot pants and legwarmers for better synchronized spins in the free skate, but not too many of the pairs were doing them last night. It would have been icing on the cake. Although I chose Pang and Tong to win, I'm happy that Savchenko and Szolkowy did; I prefer their style.
-I have so much respect for Kavaguti (nee Kawaguchi) actually being able to finish her skate last night after slamming the ice hard enough on a failed throw quadruple salchow that I got a headache just watching. I like watching the pair so maybe next season they'll be a bit cleaner.
-WOW Caydee Denney and Jeremy Barrett. What an amazing debut! Just a magical moment for those two.
-So sad about McLaughlin and Brubaker. They have just not looked right all season. I hope they can forget about the pressure next year and just skate.
-Two spots for the Americans at the Olympics, no big surprise. A disappointing showing for Canada, although all their teams were in the top ten. They'll only have two berths and their medalists from last year, Dube and Davison, never really had a shot.
-0 for 3 on my medal predictions, but 2/3 on podium prediction. Blergh.
