Canada's Virtue and Moir Win Ice Dancing Gold; Americans Davis and White Win the Silver

History was made tonight in ice dancing.  A North American team won the Olympic gold medal for the first time.  Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir did the home crowd proud by winning the free dance tonight with a sublime performance to secure victory.  Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White had a passionate performance to Phantom of Opera to earn the silver medal.  Russian bronze medalists Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin, I have no comment on.

It was quite a heartbreaker for Americans Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto.  The Olympic silver medalists from Torino finished just off the podium here, despite a passionate skate.

It was one of the best nights of skating that I can remember.  And what better ending than for the home team to win this one for Canada?  Additionally, the gold and silver medalists are training mates who share coaches, so this was quite a successful event for their contingent.  No major errors in the top teams, and just beautiful skating all around.  Americans Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates were able to climb up to 11th place.
