World Championships will be in North America or Europe

New, 5 comments

Phil Hersh reports that the world figure skating championships will be held in either North America or Europe.  That means, of course, that the show is probably going on and the ISU is likely no longer canceling the event.

ISU President Ottavio Cinquanta was quoted saying that the worlds will not be moved to Asia. "``We cannot do the event in China or Taiwan or (South) Korea,'' Cinquanta said.  ``It would be a slap in the face to the Japanese.'"

The event will likely be in late April or early May.  We will probably hear news about where by Friday.

The World Team Trophy is likely canceled, and it was meant to be a sort of testing ground for the Olympic team competition that has been proposed.  Even though the event is not taking place, it appears there are still plans to go ahead with the Olympic event.

*Cinquanta said the cancellation of the 2011 World Team Trophy will not affect the International Olympic Committee's acceptance, already provisional, of having a team event on the program at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia  The IOC was to make its final decision after seeing how the 2011 World Team Trophy was handled.

``They will probably confirm what they have already decided: that there will be a team event in Sochi,''  Cinquanta said.
