Platinum-medalist Evgeny Plushenko of Russia is seeking to regain his amateur status so he can compete in the Sochi Olympics in Russis in 2014, according to Metro.
Russian Figure Skating Federation president Alexander Gorshkov said Thursday the 2006 Olympic champion sent a letter seeking the restoration of his amateur status.
Gorshkov said at a news conference the federation gave preliminary approval, with a final decision expected in June. If approved, the federation would send it to the International Skating Union.
Plushenko lost his eligibility last year in an International Skating Union decision when he skated in paid exhibitions without gaining permission beforehand.
